 PRESIDENTS NEWSLETTER

June 2017

Dear Fellow SAGES

It is refreshing to meet a new SAGE in a tournament and to discover how much pleasure he or she gets out of playing with SAGES from different branches. We must never under-value the benefits of membership of SAGES.

As senior golf can lead to sloppy thinking about the rules of golf and their application, it is pleasing to see the focus in the branch newsletters on educating our members on golf rules. Keep it up. We must not allow our commitment to the rules and etiquette of the game to diminish.

What is Sages?

Sages Senior Golfers, the short form of the name being Sages, is a golfing society for senior golfers. Members of golf clubs who have reached the age of 50 are eligible to join their nearest branch. Branches arrange tournaments at different golf clubs within its area one or more times per month. Sages enjoy the opportunity of fellowship with other senior golfers, and the opportunity to play with Sages at different courses all over the country.

A brief history of Sages

Sages started in 1974 as a result of an increasing demand from senior golfers who felt the need for an organisation that would meet their requirements. The first branch, Rand Central (now called Jimmy Gowans branch), was formed in 1974 under the chairmanship of founder member Jimmy Gowans.
The other branches followed in quick succession, with the first Sages National Champion being crowned in 1978.
By 2012 there were 29 branches with a total of about 3000 members.

How do I join Sages?

  1. If you are 50 or over and a member in good standing at a recognised golf club, you can apply to join SAGES.
  2. Make contact with the local branch of Sages. For contact details see the latest address book under the INFORMATION link above. Else send a note to the national secretary of SAGES. Arrange to play a game or two with your nearest branch after which you may be asked to complete an application form.
